From the recording Catch a Keeper
Lyrics
Every single summer when we’d go to the lake
My dad would take me fishing with him, every chance he’d take
He taught me how to set my hook and how to cast my line
If I didn’t get it right we’d keep on trying
Sometimes my line would tangle and end up in a knot
Other times he reminded me of the lessons I forgot
I wanted to keep fishing until I got a bite
I tried to make him proud and do it right
Yeah, I want to make him proud and do it right
So I’m riggin’ up my bait, dropping in my line
If I’m gonna catch a keeper, I’ve gotta keep on trying
Putting in the time, waiting ‘til it’s right
‘Cause I wanna catch a keeper this time
I wanted to take every single fish I caught back home
But Dad said that we couldn’t keep them all
Some we had to throw back in and some we fought to keep
Some needed time to grow, they were too small
Sometimes we’d catch a big one, that seemed like such a prize
But we had to let it go, to save for other angler’s eyes
He taught me how to trust my gut to figure out what’s right
More than fishing, my dad taught me about life
He taught me about love and about life
So I’m riggin’ up my bait, dropping in my line
If I’m gonna catch a keeper, I’ve gotta’ keep on trying
Putting in the time, waiting ‘til it’s right
Yeah, I wanna catch a keeper this time
I learned we can’t keep everything that comes our way in life
We have to learn to trust ourselves to know
Which things we should hold on to, no matter what the price
And which ones would be better to let go
Sometimes we need to let some good things go
So I’m riggin’ up my bait, dropping in my line
If I’m gonna catch a keeper, I’ve gotta keep on trying
Putting in the time, waiting ‘til it’s right
Cause I wanna catch a keeper this time
Yeah, I wanna catch a keeper this time
